- Step 1 Preheat the Oven & Prep the PansPreheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans, then line the bottom with parchment paper for easy release.
- Step 2: Mix the Dry IngredientsIn a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
- Step 3: Cream the Butter & SugarIn a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar using a stand mixer or hand mixer until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes. This ensures a soft, airy cake.
- Step 4: Add the Eggs & VanillaAdd the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Step 5: Alternate Dry Ingredients & MilkAdd half of the flour mixture to the butter mixture and mix on low until just combined. Add the milk and sour cream, then the remaining flour mixture. Mix until smooth, being careful not to overmix.
- Step 6: Bake the CakeDivide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula.Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
