Ingredients
  

For the apple mixture

  • 6 cups peeled, thinly sliced tart apples (about 6–8 medium; Granny Smith recommended) Use tart apples for the best flavor.
  • 1/3 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

For the cake mixture

  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted Ensure it covers the cake mix.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with dark brown sugar, granulated sugar, orange juice, and cinnamon until well combined.
  • Spread the apple mixture evenly in the bottom of a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the apples.
  • Drizzle the melted butter over the cake mix, ensuring it covers as much as possible.

Baking

  • Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the cake mix is golden and the apples are bubbly.
  • Let it cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm, optionally with ice cream.

Notes

Store any leftover cake in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about 3-4 days. For longer storage, wrap tightly and freeze. Thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating. For best flavor, use tart apples like Granny Smith. You can alter sugar amounts based on sweetness preference.
