  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Ensure butter is softened for easy blending.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Can use almond extract as a substitute.
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour Can substitute some for whole wheat flour.
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chocolate chips Can use white chocolate or dark chocolate chips for variation.
  • 1 cup chopped cherries Can use fresh or frozen cherries.

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until smooth.
  • Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.
  • Combine the flour, baking soda, and salt in another bowl. Gradually add to the sugar mixture, mixing until just combined.
  • Fold in the chocolate chips and chopped cherries.

Baking

  • Drop by rounded tablespoons onto ungreased baking sheets.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. For longer storage, freeze after cooling completely. For a healthier version, use less sugar or add oats for extra fiber.
