Ingredients

  • ¾ cup warm milk
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 egg room temperature
  • ¼ cup melted butter
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt

For the filling:

  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ cup softened butter
  • ½ cup chocolate chips or chunks

For the glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 –3 tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Activate the yeast:

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk and granulated sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes foamy.

Mix the wet ingredients:

  • Add the melted butter and the egg into the bowl and stir to combine with the yeast mixture.

Add the dry ingredients:

  • Gradually add in the flour and salt, mixing until the dough comes together. Knead the dough by hand for 8–10 minutes or use a stand mixer for about 5 minutes until the dough is soft and elastic.

Let the dough rise:

  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 30–60 minutes, or until it doubles in size.

Prepare the filling:

  • In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon, and cocoa powder. Once the dough has risen, roll it out into a rectangle on a floured surface. Spread softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle the sugar-cocoa mix evenly and top with chocolate chips.

Roll and cut:

  • Roll the dough tightly into a log from the long side. Slice the log into 12 equal pieces.

Second rise:

  • Place the rolls in a greased baking dish and let them rise again for 20–30 minutes, until puffy.

Bake:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

Glaze and enjoy:

  • While the rolls are still warm, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Drizzle the glaze over the top and serve warm.
