Ingredients

For the cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup dark cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot coffee

For the chocolate buttercream

  • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

For the ganache and decoration

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream
  • Fresh strawberries
  • White chocolate melts
  • Chocolate curls or shards
  • Chocolate wafer sticks
  • Extra ganache for swirling

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease and line two 8-inch cake pans with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Add the eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.
  • Slowly pour in the hot coffee and stir until fully combined. The batter will be thin.
  • Divide the batter evenly between the pans and bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.

Making the chocolate buttercream

  • Beat the butter until creamy.
  • Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, then mix in heavy cream and vanilla until fluffy and smooth.
  • Frost the cooled cake layers and apply a smooth coat around the outside, creating a textured finish.
  • Chill the cake for 20 minutes before adding the ganache.

Making the ganache and decoration

  • Heat heavy cream until steaming and pour it over the chocolate chips. Let it sit for 2 minutes, then stir until glossy.
  • Spoon the ganache around the top edge to create drips and spread additional ganache over the top.
  • Melt white chocolate and drizzle across the top. Use a toothpick to create a marbled design.
  • Decorate with fresh strawberries, chocolate shards, curls, and wafer sticks.
  • Refrigerate briefly before slicing.

Notes

Ensure ingredients are at room temperature for best results. Chill ganache to create defined drips and feel free to experiment with fruits.
