For the Chocolate Cake

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk

For the Chocolate Mousse

  • 8 oz semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 large eggs, separated
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Topping

  • Whipped cream (for garnish)
  • Chocolate shavings (for garnish)

Instructions

Preparation of Chocolate Cake

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8-inch round cake pan.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with buttermilk. Mix just until combined.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.
  • Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow to cool completely.

Preparation of Chocolate Mousse

  • Place chopped semi-sweet chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl over simmering water, stirring until melted and smooth.
  • In another bowl, whisk egg whites until soft peaks form, gradually adding sugar until stiff peaks form.
  • Stir egg yolks into the cooled chocolate mixture until smooth.
  • Gently fold whipped egg whites into the chocolate mixture, then fold in whipped cream until smooth.

Assembly

  • Place the cooled chocolate cake on a serving plate.
  • Spread chocolate mousse evenly over the top of the cake. Refrigerate for 3–4 hours until mousse is set.

Garnishing

  • Decorate the cake with whipped cream and sprinkle with chocolate shavings.
  • Slice and serve chilled.

Notes

Use room-temperature ingredients for smoother mixing. Allow melted chocolate to cool slightly before adding eggs to prevent curdling.
