  • 1 cup packed brown sugar

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer, edges touching.
  • In a saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar over medium heat, stirring constantly until it comes to a boil. Let it boil for about 1 minute while stirring.
  • Pour the bubbling butter-sugar mixture evenly over the saltines, using a spatula to spread if needed.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 5–7 minutes, until the toffee is bubbly and set.
  • Remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee. Let them sit for a few minutes until they melt.
  • Spread the melted chocolate smoothly over the toffee with an offset spatula or the back of a spoon.
  • While the chocolate is still soft, add chopped nuts, crushed candy canes, or a light sprinkle of sea salt if you like.
  • Let the sheet cool completely at room temperature, then break into pieces.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature. Layer with parchment paper so pieces don’t stick. Properly stored, it keeps for about 1–2 weeks. For warm kitchens, keep it in the fridge for up to 2 weeks but allow it to reach room temperature before serving.
