Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 40 pieces saltine crackers
  • 1 cup unsalted butter 2 sticks
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 cups chocolate chips

Optional Toppings

  • chopped nuts e.g., almonds, pecans, or peanuts
  • crushed candy canes for a festive touch
  • flaky sea salt

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper and arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer.

Cooking

  • In a saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar over medium heat, stirring constantly until it comes to a boil. Allow it to boil for 3 minutes without stirring.
  • Pour the butter mixture over the saltines, spreading it evenly.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 5–7 minutes, until bubbly.
  • Remove from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips over the top. Let them sit for a few minutes to melt, then spread the chocolate evenly.
  • If desired, sprinkle with nuts, crushed candy canes, or sea salt.
  • Allow to cool completely at room temperature or refrigerate until set.

Serving

  • Break into pieces and serve or package as gifts.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. For longer storage, keep it in the fridge for up to two weeks. Use a foil-lined baking sheet for easy cleanup and to lift the candy out in one piece. Timing is important during the toffee boiling stage for the right texture.
