Equipment

  • Rimmed baking sheet (10x15-inch or jelly roll pan)
  • Aluminum foil or parchment paper
  • Saucepan
  • Rubber spatula or spoon
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons
  • Offset spatula or butter knife
  • Refrigerator or cool space for setting

Ingredients

  • 1 sleeve saltine crackers about 40 crackers
  • 1 cup 2 sticks unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts optional
  • Festive sprinkles or sea salt optional, for topping

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Pan

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment paper. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer, edge to edge.

Step 2: Make the Caramel

  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and brown sugar together. Bring the mixture to a boil and let it bubble for 3–4 minutes, stirring constantly until thickened and smooth.

Step 3: Pour Over Crackers

  • Carefully pour the hot caramel mixture over the crackers, spreading it evenly with a spatula.

Step 4: Bake

  • Place the pan in the oven and bake for 5 minutes. The caramel will bubble again — that’s perfect!

Step 5: Add Chocolate

  • Remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the hot caramel. Let them sit for 2–3 minutes, then spread the melted chocolate with an offset spatula.

Step 6: Add Toppings (Optional)

  • Sprinkle with chopped nuts, sea salt, or festive sprinkles for extra flavor and crunch.

Step 7: Cool & Break

  • Let the pan cool at room temperature for 15 minutes, then place it in the fridge for at least 1 hour or until fully set. Once hardened, break into pieces by hand.
