Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 each egg Use room temperature for better mixing.
  • 1/2 cup milk Use room temperature for better mixing.
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup hot water Gradually stir in; the batter will be runny.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Add the egg, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Whisk the mixture until it’s smooth.
  • Gradually stir in the hot water. The batter will be runny, but that’s exactly what you want!
  • Pour the batter into a greased 8-9 inch round cake pan.

Baking

  • Bake it in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes.
  • Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick; it should come out clean. Let the cake cool completely.

Serving

  • Serve with a dusting of powdered sugar, a drizzle of chocolate sauce, or a rich ganache.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days, or refrigerate for up to a week. Let it come to room temperature before serving for the best taste. For variations, add chocolate chips or swap some all-purpose flour for almond flour.
