  • 4 lbs beef short ribs
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 inch piece fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chopped green onions for garnish

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C).
  • Season the short ribs with salt and pepper.
  • In a large Dutch oven, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Brown the short ribs on all sides, then remove from the pot.

Cooking

  • In the same pot, add onion, garlic, and ginger, and sauté until fragrant.
  • Stir in beef broth, soy sauce, brown sugar, rice vinegar, and sesame oil.
  • Return the short ribs to the pot, cover, and braise in the oven for 3 hours, or until tender.
  • Remove from oven, garnish with chopped green onions, and serve.

Notes

Serve over a bed of steamed rice or noodles. Can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months. Brown short ribs well for extra flavor. Adjust sweetness of sauce by modifying brown sugar.
