Ingredients

For the Cake Batter

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Fudge Topping

  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • cups hot water

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease an 8×8-inch baking dish.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Stir until a smooth batter forms. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish.

Add the Fudge Layer

  • In a separate bowl, mix granulated sugar, brown sugar, and cocoa powder. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter.
  • Carefully pour the hot water over the entire dish. Do not stir. The liquid will look strange — that’s exactly what you want.

Bake

  • Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the top looks set and slightly cracked. The cake will rise above the sauce while baking.
  • Let the cake rest for 5–10 minutes before serving. The sauce underneath will thicken as it cools slightly.

Notes

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, fresh berries, chocolate shavings, or a drizzle of caramel sauce. Do not stir after adding the water to maintain the layered effect. Use hot water to activate the cocoa and sugar.
