mandarin oranges, segmented
Fresh or high-quality canned, drained thoroughly.

heavy cream

mascarpone cheese

Instructions
Preparation
Peel and segment the mandarins, removing any white pith.
In a chilled bowl, beat heavy cream and mascarpone until stiff peaks form. Gently fold in condensed milk and vanilla bean paste.
Lightly toast the ladyfingers or cut the sponge cake into small, even pieces.
Layering
Place a generous layer of cream in the bottom of a glass bowl.
Add a layer of ladyfingers or sponge cake. Optionally brush lightly with mandarin juice.
Repeat layers until ingredients are used up, pressing down gently to remove air pockets.
Arrange mandarin segments in a spiral pattern on the top layer of cream.
Chilling and Serving
Refrigerate the trifle for at least 4 to 6 hours to allow flavors to meld.
Dust the top with powdered sugar before serving.
Notes
Serve with a crisp Moscato or hot Earl Grey tea. Garnish with mint or toasted almond slivers for contrast.
