  • 1 loaf 1 loaf of bread, cubed Use day-old bread or toast fresh bread for better texture.
  • 1 cup 1 cup onion, chopped
  • 1 cup 1 cup celery, chopped
  • 1/2 cup 1/2 cup butter
  • 2-3 cups 2-3 cups vegetable or chicken broth For a richer taste, swap out half the vegetable broth with chicken broth.
  • 1 tablespoon 1 tablespoon fresh sage, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried) Feel free to mix in your favorite herbs.
  • 1 tablespoon 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation

  • In a large skillet, melt the butter and sauté the onion and celery until soft.
  • In a large bowl, combine the cubed bread, sautéed vegetables, herbs, salt, and pepper.
  • Gradually add broth until the mixture is moist but not soggy.
  • Transfer the mixture to a slow cooker.
  • Cover and cook on low for 4-6 hours, stirring occasionally, until the stuffing is heated through and the flavors meld.

Notes

Serve the Slow Cooker Stuffing with your favorite meats, such as turkey or chicken. It can also be served on its own as a comforting side dish. If you have leftovers, let the stuffing cool completely and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. To reheat, warm it in the microwave or on the stove with a little added broth to keep it moist.
