  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk Can substitute with milk mixed with vinegar or lemon juice.

Baking Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk. Stir until a soft dough forms.
  • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently for about 1 minute.
  • Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet.
  • Cut a deep cross on the top of the loaf.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 30–35 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Store leftover bread wrapped in a clean tea towel or paper bag at room temperature for 1-2 days. For longer storage, slice and freeze in a sealed bag for up to 3 months. Reheat slices in a toaster or warm oven.
